Community Partner Spotlight | Befrienders

At Greater Gallatin United Way (GGUW), we take immense pride in our partnership with Befrienders, a pivotal force in our collective effort to enrich mental health and well-being throughout our community. Befrienders' unwavering commitment to alleviating social isolation among vulnerable seniors aligns seamlessly with our core focus, as we champion the belief that every individual should flourish across all facets of life. Through the consistent provision of companionship, Befrienders not only enhances seniors' social, emotional, physical, and cognitive well-being but also champions a vision where older adults are revered and empowered to maintain their social engagement and independence.

BEFRIENDERS' VISION

Befrienders envisions a community where older adults are esteemed for their past and present contributions to society, fostering environments where they can remain socially vibrant and self-sufficient.

BEFRIENDERS' MISSION

The mission of Befrienders is to bridge the gap between community volunteers and older adults, fostering relationships built on companionship, support, and advocacy to enhance the lives of seniors.

Befrienders' commitment to improving the quality of life for seniors is unwavering. Through their flagship program, volunteers dedicate themselves to spending meaningful time with seniors, providing companionship and support. These relationships, built on trust and mutual respect, serve as a cornerstone for the emotional and mental well-being of our elderly population. Furthermore, the innovative Lend-a-Hand Task Force addresses practical needs, ensuring that no senior is left to navigate life's challenges alone.

Last year, thanks to GGUW's funding through our Community Impact Grant, Befrienders was able to extend its reach and support to a staggering 291 seniors in our community. This support wouldn't have been possible without the dedication of 154 volunteers who went through a rigorous onboarding process, including data entry, background checks, reference checks, interviews, and comprehensive training.

In the past year alone, Befrienders has matched over 98 seniors with volunteer companions, creating bonds that transcend mere friendship. These matches, carefully curated to ensure compatibility and mutual respect, have blossomed into meaningful relationships that enrich the lives of both seniors and volunteers alike.

The statistics surrounding social isolation are sobering, painting a stark picture of its far-reaching consequences. The National Council on Aging warns of its detrimental effects on physical and mental health, with implications ranging from high blood pressure to cognitive decline. In Montana, where societal factors exacerbate the issue, the need for intervention is more pressing than ever. Befrienders' programs offer solace and support to those who need it most.

The heartfelt testimonials from seniors paired with volunteer companions resonate deeply. They express a sense of reduced loneliness, heightened engagement, and a profound connection to their community. If you haven't already, take a moment to explore these touching stories and delightful illustrations on social media. Befrienders exemplifies the transformative power of compassion and human connection. As Greater Gallatin United Way remains steadfast in our commitment to promoting mental health and well-being, we are honored to stand alongside Befrienders as partners in cultivating a community where every individual not only survives but thrives.
